Liebler and Sylvan Capture Hall of Fame Title

Columbia: Steve Liebler of Irmo and Gus Sylvan of Columbia teamed for the second time in 1998 to capture the SCGA's Hall of Fame Better Ball. With an earlier victory in the Mid-Am Four Ball in May, Liebler and Sylvan opened the two day tournament with a commanding three shot lead. They blitzed the 6800 yard Columbia Country Club course with a first round score of 62 - ten under par. Sylvan led the way as he accounted for seven of the team's ten birdies.

On Sunday, the leaders could only muster a three under par 33 on the front. Sylvan birdied number 11 to put the team at 4 under for the day and 14 under for the tournament. Playing four groups ahead of the leaders, former champions, David DuPre and Chip Prezioso made a significant run.

After a first day 67, DuPre/Prezioso made five birdies on the front for 31. After birdies on the par four 11th and par five 12th, they stood at 12 under and just two shots back. Two pars and then a birdie on the par five 15th by Prezioso left the pair one shot out of the lead.

With what seemed to be a lot of opportunities in front of them, the team of Liebler and Sylvan could only make pars. It turned out to be just enough as the team of DuPre and Prezioso made par on the last three and failed to make up any more ground.
