Maxfield Takes Seniors Title

Myrtle Beach: Gerald Maxfield of Aiken posted an even par 214 to claim the South Carolina Golf Association's 40^th Annual Seniors Championship. The 54 hole Championship was conducted on the Legends Resort's Parkland and Heathland Courses, August 21-23, 1998.

Maxfield fired rounds of 73, 72 and 69. His final round 69 was the lowest of the Championship. Maxfield said, "This was my third year here (The Legends) and I am finally learning the greens. I made some putts and that was the difference."

Although this was the Aiken residents first South Carolina title, Maxfield is no stranger to winning. The 63 year old claimed three New Hampshire Senior Championships prior to his migration south three years ago.

First and second round leader Dick Horne finished two strokes back in second place. Horne, 58, lost the title on the final hole when an errant drive found a fairway bunker leading to a double bogey six. Horne shared second place with Bill Bonney of Georgetown.

The field of 223 players compete in age groups for the first 36 holes. The winners and runner-ups are listed below.
