Horne Wins Senior Title Myrtle Beach: Dick Horne of Mt. Pleasant posted a one under par 213 to win the 41st Annual South Carolina Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. The 54 hole tournament was played at the Legends Resort, August 20-22, 1999 . Horne, straight from a seventh place finish in the British Senior Amateur, began the day tied for the lead with Danny Dean of Hollywood and Bob Stringer of Blythewood. Dean quickly captured the lead with a birdie on the first hole. A birdie by Horne on the second and a bogey by Dean on the third reversed the positions. Stringer began with two bogeys in the first three holes and was never a factor. Horne turned his game up a notch and made two more birdies on the front for a three under par 33 and a four stroke lead at the turn. His nearest challengers with nine holes to play were Buck Leigh, the 1997 Champion and Phil McDilda of Conway. Leigh had begun the 1999 Championship with a huge mental error. An extra club in his bag during the first round resulted in a four stoke penalty and huge deficit to overcome. A second round 69 left him five strokes back of the leaders. His front nine score of 32 put him back into contention at one over par for the tournament. McDilda, who made three birdies on the front, but two bogeys was also at one over for the championship. Horne managed to hang on despite making three bogeys on the back side. In his own words, Horne stated, “I wasn’t leaking oil, I was gushing. After making bogey on every other hole (13, 15, 17), if there had been a 19th hole, I probably would have bogeyed that too. I’m just glad I ran out of holes.” Neither Leigh nor McDilda could gain enough ground on Horne on the back. Each made eight pars and a bogey. Ned Johnson of Seneca, slipped by Leigh and McDilda with a 69 to finish alone in second place, two strokes back. Charles Chism of Surfside Beach, played the back nine in 34 to finish in a three way tie for third with Leigh and McDilda at 216. In addition to the Championship, the SCGA added an “Old Friends Division.” The new division plays only 36 holes and a forward set of tees approximately 400 yards shorter. Bill Alexander, 72, was medalist in that division with a five over par 148. For more information, contact Paul Rouillard with the SCGA at (803) 732-9311.
