SCGA Partners' Championship - Final Results

Sylvan – Liebler Blow Away Field

The team of Gus Sylvan (Columbia) and Steve Liebler (Irmo) took their first SCGA Partners’ Championship at Northwoods Golf Club (Columbia) in record fashion. Following a first round 65 which produced a one stroke lead, the duo came out of the gate charging on the second day. Birdies on three of the first five holes extended their lead to three over Lanny Correll, Jr. and Thomas Kennaday (Columbia) and Robert and David Dargan (Columbia.)

After a par at the short par 5 sixth hole, birdies by Sylvan at 7 and 9
and one by Liebler at 8 gave them a three stoke margin heading into
the final nine. Correll and Kennaday made birdies at 7 and 9, but lost
ground to the leaders. With a 33 on the front nine,
Dargan–Dargan found themselves four back heading into the back nine.

A best ball bogey at 10 by Sylvan and a birdie by the Dargans cut the margin to two. A birdie and a bogey by the Dargans, and all pars on the back nine by Correll-Kennaday left both teams fighting for second as Sylvan-Liebler closed with two birdies (16 and 17) and a par.

The 15 under par total of 129 was a new tournament record by five strokes. The previous record was held by Walter and T.D. Todd, Jr. of Laurens, who posted a two round total of 134 in 1997 over this same course.

Robin Alley and Brian Loquist (Columbia) closed with a 68 to take first place in the first flight with a score of 139. Ron Schroder and Mike Wiland (Aiken) came on even stronger with a final round 67 to capture the second flight.

The 9th Annual SCGA Partners’ Championship was held at the Northwoods Golf Club in Columbia which played at 6514 yards and a par of 72. The tournament is held each year to benefit the junior programs of the South Carolina Golf Association.
