Riggs Wins At Home Course

It was a beautiful day for golf, with temperatures hovering in the seventies and a mild breeze present. The course played effectively longer as it was wet in many places due to rain all week before the tournament.

That "elusive one stroke" again provided the winning margin as Charles Riggs shot 69 to win low gross, outscoring fellow Berkeley Country Club competitor Gene Forte who finished with a 70. Mike Windham from the Miler Country Club scored 79/66 to win field low net. Windham won low net on a score card playoff with Russell Hester (71/66), Regent Park, and Gene Forte (70/66), Berkeley CC. Forte however won first in Class ‘A’ by edging out Hester on a score card playoff. Hester’s daughter, fifteen year old Sara, blistered the course with 74/69 to take third place. The Hesters had the clubhouse buzzing as Russell turned the front nine in 32 while Sara scored 37 in trying to keep pace. Sara almost caught Dad on the back nine with a steady 37 to his 39. We will certainly hear more from Sara in future competitions. Tom Summer from Berkeley CC scored an eagle on hole #17 to shoot 78/71 but it was too late to catch the field in his highly competitive Class ‘A’ flight.

Meanwhile, Windham also won the Class ‘B’ competition by one stroke over Larry Dangerfield (83/67) from Berkeley CC. Jack Boggs (82/69) from Redbank won third in Class ‘B’, also winning by scorecard playoff over Paul Allen (91/69), also from Redbank.
