Palmer Survives Playoff
Bill Palmer birdied the last hole of regulation and then made par on the
first playoff hole to capture the 2007 SCGA Senior Championship. Charleston
native, Frank Ford III shot a final round 69 to force the event into extra
holes.
Palmer, a Bluffton resident, shot a final round of 74, including an amazing
30 foot putt on the last hole to shoot a three day total of 218. When Palmer
came off the 15th green he had a one shot lead over Ford, but two costly
bogies on both 16 & 17 left the Belfair member one back coming into the
tough 18th hole. Having to make birdie to get into a playoff, Palmer knocked
his approach just off the fringe hole high left and then knocked in the fast
30 foot putt for the tie.
The playoff, contested on hole #18 and in the rain, was won with a routine
two putt par by Palmer after a three putt bogey by Ford. This is the second
consecutive year that Palmer has been part of playoff, losing to David
Hambly in 2006 at Belfair Plantation.
The 2007 SCGA Senior Championship was played on the par 72 - 6,783 yard
Nicklaus course at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, SC. The field
consisted of 132 players over the age of 55 and was cut to the low 60 and
ties after the first two days of play. 64 players made the cut at 163 or
better. The Senior Championship is one of 18 Major Championships conducted
by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 49th year of existence.
