Douglas and Long come through with victory
A second consecutive round of five under par 67 propelled the team of Jim Douglas (Aiken ) and Jared Long (Aiken) to victory in the 35th Annual SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship. Douglas and Long carded six birdies and one bogey in their final round. Their two day total of ten under par 134 was two strokes better than playing competitors Tom Bryant (Columbia) and Marvin Nesmith (Lugoff), as well as First Flight winners, Bill Smunk (Kingstree) and Neal Baker (Charleston). The Baker/Smunk pair carded the low round of the tournament with a final round eight under par 64.
Defending Champions Lewis Rollins (Greenwood) and Frank Williams (Greenwood) tied for third along with the teams of Butch Derrick (Columbia) and Robert Renfroe (Lexington), and Jeff Batts (Chapin) and Harry Benenhaley (Columbia). All three teams carded two day totals of seven under par 137.
The 2008 SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship is being played on the par 72 – 6,413 yard, Santee Cooper Country Club in Santee, S.C. The field consists of 64 two-man teams playing Best Ball format conducted over thirty six holes. The Senior Better Ball Championship is one of 18 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.
