| Glover Defends With Fifteen Under!
Charleston, SC: Lucas Glover successfully defended his title in the
68th Annual South Carolina
Golf Association (SCGA) Amateur Championship The 72 hole Championship was
conducted at the
Country Club of Charleston, August 5-8, 1999. Glover, rising junior at
Clemson University,
set a new tournament record with a fifteen under par 269.
Glover held off the charge of Jonathan Byrd. Byrd, caught Glover quickly
with birdies
on the first two holes and took the lead with a third birdie on the
fourth. A rising
senior at Clemson, Byrd was recently named to the Walker Cup Team and is
ranked 3rd
nationally by Golfweek.
Glover answered back with a birdie on #5 and regained his third round lead
with a birdie
#8. Although he would share the lead with Byrd briefly again after #9,
Glover never fall
off the top again. Glover, the 1998 Champion, broke his own scoring record
from last year
and holds the SCGA Junior Championships record as well. Glover, 19, is
ranked 16th
nationally among amateurs.
Local favorite, Bert Atkinson made a run at the College kids by making
birdie on five
out of the first seven holes. The forty-one year old’s chances were dashed
when he bogeyed
holes 10 and 12. Atkinson finished out the round with a 68 but it was not
enough to catch
the young lions.
The Country Club of Charleston, measuring 6,526 yards, was the site of the
SCGA’s first
Amateur back in 1930. The par 71 layout, with its elevated greens and
difficult collection
areas, is best known for the difficult 11th hole. The 187 yard par three
has a table top
green with a false front. It is defended by eight foot deep bunkers that
run both sides of
the green. Byrd’s bogey, for the second straight day, made him just one of
the victims the
hole that has averaged almost four strokes for the field through four
rounds.
The field of 145 was cut to the low 70 scores and ties for the final two
rounds. The cut came
at a score of 151. For more information or to be added to the e-mail/fax
list, contact Paul
Rouillard with the SCGA at (803) 898-6896.
