Amateurs take Palmetto Cup in unprecedented victory
In the 25^th playing of the Palmetto Cup Matches the amateur golfers representing the South Carolina Golf Association defeated the club professionals of the South Carolina Chapter of the Professional Golfers Association, 19 ½ to 7 ½.  The amateurs amassed an unprecedented 9 – 0 lead on the first day of competition, winning every match in Selected Drive Alternate Shot format.  That first day lead proved to be insurmountable, as the amateurs continued their good play on day two and  recorded an additional 10 ½ points in singles competition.
As the SCGA squad won every match in team competition, all but seven players were also victorious in singles play on day two.  It should be noted that of the senior matches, the amateurs accounted for 3 ½ out of 4 possible points for their team.
The Palmetto Cup Matches pits 18 amateur golfers versus 18 club professionals, including two senior players for each side.  The 25^th Anniversary Palmetto Cup Matches were competed at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, SC.  The SCPGA currently holds an overall edge in the matches with a record of 13 – 10 – 1.  The 1997 matches were cancelled due to rain.
