Liebler & Gravley Repeat

With a two round total of fourteen under par 130, Defending Champions Steve Liebler & Mike Gravley are once again the SCGA Mid Amateur Four Ball Champions. Being played at Kiawah Island’s Oak Point course, the duo shot nines of 32-33 for a final round 65 and a one shot victory over Tre Sheppard and Bill Smunk.

Although the team worked together to regain the title, it was Liebler who was on fire during the final round. The Irmo native made eight birdies on his own and out of those birdies, only one putt was made from outside of five feet. However, the former two time SCGA Player of the Year saved his best shot for last. Tied for the lead coming down the 18th fairway, Liebler knocked his approach shot to within 6 inches to secure the trophy for the second consecutive year.

With his own dramatic putt on the tough Oak Point greens, Tre Sheppard made birdie on the 18th hole to get him and his partner, Bill Smunk in sole possession of second place at 131. Darrell Connelly and Matthew Laydon finished in third at 132.

The 2009 SCGA Mid Amateur Four Ball Championship was played on the par 72 – 6,663 yard Oak Point course at Kiawah Island Resort. The field consisted of 64 two-man teams playing Best Ball format conducted over thirty six holes. The Mid Amateur Four Ball Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 2010 event will be played at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan.
