Shimmin Increases Lead

Gary Shimmin continued his great play over the C.C. of South Carolina layout with another under par round of 71 and a two day total of 139. The two day total of five under par now gives the leader a five shot cushion over his nearest competitor, Bill Smunk of Kingstree.

Teeing off early in the morning and battling breezy conditions, the 64 year old Shimmin bogied the third hole of the day before rattling off birdies on holes 5, 6 & 9. Making the turn at two under par 34, the Okatie resident strung together eight straight pars before succumbing to a bogey on the treacherous 406 yard par four 18th hole. Shimmin stands as the only player after two rounds under par at 139.

Bill Smunk, a former SCGA State Amateur Champion, also put together a fine round of one under par 71 for the day to get him back to even for the event and five shots behind the leader. The 2008 third place finisher, Jim Van Ooteghem from Seneca once again finds himself in the hunt and in the last group at 145.

The round of the day was posted by Lauren’s TD Todd. Todd managed six birdies against only two bogeys for a four under score of 68. Defending Champion Mike Weiner from Kiawah Island stands tied for 5th with five other players at 147.

Exactly 60 players made the cut at 157.

The 2009 SCGA Senior Championship is being played on the par 72 - 6,525 yard Country Club of South Carolina layout in Florence, SC. The field consists of 124 players over the age of 55 and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the first two days of play. The Senior Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 50th year of existence.
