SCGA Four Ball Championship

Stage is set for Finals Showdown 

Three different age groups will be represented in tomorrow’s Four Ball match play finals as early twenty-somethings, Brandon Coggins and Brad Williams (Gaffney) will battle 33 year old Will Dennis (Greenville) and his partner, 52 year old Matt Grandy (Piedmont). Coggins and Williams advance after a decisive 5 & 3 victory over Honea Path pair Josh Branyon and Matt Davis. While the Branyon / Davis pair struggled in the match, Coggins and Williams managed a three under par score for the round.  

In what can be considered an upset, Will Dennis and Matt Grandy posted a 3 & 1 victory over long-time SCGA tournament veterans, Todd White and Rick Cloninger. The match went back and forth all afternoon until White and Cloninger recorded their first bogey of the tournament at the par four fifteenth. Dennis and Grandy took a 1 up advantage at that point and didn’t look back. Grandy rolled in an 11 foot birdie putt at the 16^th, then added a conceded birdie at the difficult par three 17^th for a 3 & 1 victory.  

Coggins / Williams and Dennis / Grandy will face off in the final round of match play tomorrow morning.  

It was a tale of two brackets in Quarterfinals play, as the upper bracket provided two tightly contested matches, while the lower provided more one-sided competition. The first match out in the morning pitted last year’s runners up, David Kite and Ross Tooley (Charleston area) against Gaffney pair Brandon Coggins and Brad Williams. The match went 19 holes, with Williams rolling in a birdie putt on the par four first for victory. The other upper bracket match went all the way to the tough 18^th, ending with a 1 Up victory for Josh Branyon and Matt Davis over Matt Laydon (Charleston) and Bill Smunk (Kingstree).  

In the lower bracket things weren’t as competitive but still provided some fireworks during the course of play. Todd White (Moore) holed a nine foot eagle putt on the par five 16^th to secure a 4 & 2 victory for he and Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill) over the Columbia team of Ryan Cronin and John Mathias. Will Dennis and Matt Grandy were also able to end their match on the 16^th, defeating Timothy Pope (Spartanburg) and Jeremy Revis (Greenville), 3 &2.  

The 2010 SCGA Four Ball Championship is one of 19 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 47th Annual event is being played on the 6,852 yard, par 72 golf course at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, SC.
