Grimes Makes a Charge to Take Second Day Lead

Columbia native, Jarrett Grimes, the 2008 SCGA Mid Amateur Champion fired four birdies and two eagles to take the second day lead of the 29^th annual event at nine under par.  First day leader Rick Cloninger, is one shot back at eight under along with Steve Liebler who fired a second consecutive 68.

Grimes started the day with a birdie, three pars and then an eagle on the par five fifth hole.  The lone hiccup of the day came on the seventh hole in the form of a bogey.  However, Grimes quickly made up the error with another birdie on the par three eighth.  Birdies on holes 14 and 15 and an eagle on the 17^th followed the front nine 32 with a 33 on the back and a round of seven under 65.  That following a first day score of 70 puts Grimes in good position heading into the final day with a one shot lead at nine under par 135. 

Defending Champion, Marcus Grumbles shot a two round total of 155 to miss the cut by two. 

It took a score of nine over par 153 to make the cut to the low 60 players and ties which resulted in a final round field of 68 players vying for the title.

The 2010 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship is being played on the par 72 ~ 6,504 yard Country Club of Spartanburg golf course in Spartanburg, SC. The field consists of 120 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and will be cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round. The Mid-Amateur is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 29th year of existence.
