Palmer Surges to Lead

After a second round 70 and a two day total of five under par 139, Bill Palmer holds a four shot lead over three other players in the SCGA’s Senior Championship being held at the Oldfield Club in Okatie, SC.

Palmer, the 2007 Senior Champion, had five birdies during his round to gain the four shot advantage heading into the final day. The Bluffton resident finished strong making birdies on the 17th and 18th holes after bogeying the tough par three 16th. The 59 year old member at Belfair has been in this situation before playing in the final group three of the last four Senior Championships he has competed in.

Tied for second at 143 are Mike Gravley from Greer, Bluffton’s William Fuller & Jim Van Ootegham of Seneca. Ootegham fired the round of the event shooting a five under par 67 to climb the leader board. Defending Champion, Bill Smunk from Kingstree and his brother John Smunk of Port Royal are tied at 144.

60 players made the cut at 158. Thursday’s final round will begin at 8.30 a.m. off of #1 and #10 tee’s.  For final round pairings - Final Round Pairings

The 2010 SCGA Senior Championship is being played on the par 72 - 6,594 yard Oldfield Club layout in Okatie, SC. The field consists of 116 players over the age of 55 and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the first two days of play. The Senior Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 52nd year of existence.
