Hendrick win in Playoff
What was built up to be a highly competitive final round in the SCGA Senior
Better Ball Championship lived up to expectations as David Grant (Chester) and
Joe Hendrick (Chesterfield) defeated Mike Bright (Mt. Pleasant) and Jim Kirkham
(Columbia) on the first playoff hole of sudden death. David Grant holed a five
foot birdie putt on the par four 10th hole to secure the victory. His
partner, Hendrick had just missed a similar putt for birdie; and Bright and
Kirkham, who had put together the low round of the tournament with a six under
par 66, had birdie tries that did not fall. Both teams finished regulation at 9
under par 135.
Finishing just one shot out of the playoff were the team of Steedley Candler (Lexington) and Robert Renfroe (Lexington), who shot a five under par 67 in Sunday’s round. Robby Bennett (Cheraw) and Wayne Howle (Darlington) took first place in the First Flight with a two day total of five under par 139. Dan Beacham and Ronnie Branyon (both of Honea Path), tied for first place in the Second Flight with Neal Baker (Charleston) and Bill Smunk (Kingstree) at two over par 146.
The 2010 SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship is one of 19 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 37th Annual event was played on the 6,413 yard, par 72 golf course at Santee Cooper Country Club in Santee, SC.
