Reigning Champions Take Opening Round Lead at Senior Four-Ball

With blue skies and sunshine greeting the field at the opening round of the SCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship, the reigning SCGA Senior Four-Ball Champion team of Stan Sill (Spartanburg) and Jeff Stephens (Ware Shoals) eye a chance at becoming back-to-back champions, after Sill and Stephens fired an opening round 8 under par 64 to lead by one stroke heading into final round of the 28th Annual SCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship being held at The Country Club of Spartanburg.

Sill and Stephens compiled six birdies, eleven pars, and one eagle throughout their round to take the lead by one shot over the teams of Jeff Pope (N. Augusta) & Jay Blackburn (Aiken), Mark Pike (Inman) & Steve Teaster (Spartanburg), and John Dennis (Greenville) & Frank Wrenn (Greenville). Heading into the final round, the leaderboard is stacked full of teams that have plenty of firepower to make a comeback. Currently, there are twelve teams that are within three shots or better of Sill and Stephens.   

The field will be split into three flights for the final round based on first round scores. 

The Final Round will begin on Tuesday, March 30th at 8.00 AM with the leaders playing at 1:10 PM.

The 2021 SCGA Senior Four Ball Championship is being played on the par 72 – 6,284 yard Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, S.C. The field consists of 62 two-man teams playing Best Ball format conducted over thirty-six holes. The Senior Four Ball Championship is one of 21 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.  

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina. As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf. Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 59 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events. Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, Golf Genius Tournament Management Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame. The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
