This morning, Florence Country Club welcomed 144 of the state’s top ranked junior golfers for the first round of the 64th SCGA Junior Championship Presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation.

Mason Kucia of Indian Land finished the day at six-under par 65 to take the first-round lead. He had an impressive seven birdies and holds a one-shot lead heading into the second round, tomorrow.

“I made a good putt on 17 and that really kind of kick started my round,” said Kucia. ”I made a few good par saves and played really good on my last five holes. Once the putts started flowing, the score ended up pretty good which is good to see. I want to keep the same mindset going into tomorrow and try not to get ahead of myself.”

Luke Sullivan of Columbia currently sits in second, posting five-under par 66 for round one.

“My round was really good today except I only hit two fairways,” Sullivan said. “I feel good because this was the best my short game has been in years which saved me. I need to do some better work off the tee tomorrow and hopefully go lower than today.”

Mitchell McNeill of North Augusta and Waymon Thomas of Mount Pleasant sit tied for third, each carding a first-round score of four-under par 67.

Four players sit T5, all posting three-under par 68 for round one.

Round two of the 64th SCGA Junior Championship Presented by the Heritage Classic foundation begins tomorrow at 8:00 A.M. off #1 and #10.
