Hannon-Stringer Claim Second Four-Ball Title

Seabrook Island, SC - 2001 Champions Vic Hannon (Camden) and Bob Stringer (Blythewood) came from two strokes down on the final day to capture the 10th Annual South Carolina Golf Association Senior Four Ball Championship. The event was held over the Robert Trent Jones designed Crooked Oaks Course on Seabrook Island.

Beginning the day two strokes back, Hannon-Stringer who had finished as runner -ups in 2002, went to work early on the deficit. An opening birdie at the par four first was followed by another at the third. A third birdie in five holes came at the par-3 fifth, but a bogey six at the par-5 sixth slowed their challenge. The eighth hole produced another birdie and the duo made the turn at 3-under par 33. This put them at 5-under par for the tournament going into the final nine holes.

First round leaders Marion and Don King (Catawba/Rock Hill) were making a charge themselves. Two birdies on the front at holes 2 and 9 gave them the outright lead with just nine holes left to play. A bogey at the tough 390 yard par-4 tenth brought them back into a tie for the lead with Hannon-Stringer.

A birdie by Stringer at the par-5 eleventh moved their team into the lead at 6-under par. A bogey at the reachable par-5 fifteenth left the two teams tied at 5-under par with only a few hole left to play. Hannon-Stringer managed to par the final three holes. The Kings however, missed a three foot putt for par at seventeen to fall out of the share of the lead. A final putt on the last hole stopped a couple of inches short and Hannon-Stringer had their second Senior Four Ball Championship in three years.

Two other teams Steven Roach and John Orr (Florence) and Scott Schwarz (Summerville)-Nick Avery (Goose Creek) came close the final day with solid last rounds, but both teams ended up in a tie for second - one stroke back.

Former Champions Ben Shadoan (Taylors) and Urquit Morris (Charleston) claimed the First Flight with a score of 1-over par 145. Don Phillips and Thomas (Bubba) Ulmer captured the Second Flight at 147, and last minute additions John Caldwell and Tucker O'Keefe (Seabrook Island) used a final round 74 to take honors in the Third Flight.
