22nd Annual Palmetto Cup Matches

The 22nd Annual Palmetto Cup Matches were held Sunday and Monday, November 2nd & 3rd at the Daniel Island Club in Charleston, South Carolina. Captained by Rick Veith of Greenville, the South Carolina Golf Association competed against the South Carolina PGA Chapter, captained by Craig Malone, Head Golf Professional at Timberlake Plantation. On Sunday, the two man teams from each association competed in an alternate shot format, and on Monday, the competition featured 18 singles matches. Three points were available in each match – one point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and one point for winning the overall match.

On Sunday, the South Carolina PGA Chapter jumped out to a commanding nine point lead, picking up 18 of the 27 points available in the alternate shot format. The South Carolina Chapter won five of the matches 3 to 0, and was only shut out in one match the entire day. The teams of Clem King and Terry Johnson, Brooks Blackburn and Wayne Meyers, Koll Farman and Paul Consolo, Jim Fellner and David Lamb, and Mark Ernst and Burke Cromer all scored 3 to 0 victories for the SCPGA Chapter.

During Monday’s singles matches, the SCGA mounted a wonderful comeback, but was unable to overcome the 9-point deficit from Sunday’s play. Rob Hrubala, Walter Todd, Bert Atkinson, and Todd White were all victorious 3 to 0 in their singles matches on Monday. Kevin King and Jeremy Revis both won 2.5 points and Robert Dargan, Bob Stringer, and Mike Gravely all captured 2 points in their matches. Carrying the SCPGA, were Terry Johnson, Tommy Pendley, Brooks Blackburn, Paul Consolo and Michael Smith, who each won their head to head matches 3 to 0.

The final tally had the SCPGA winning the Palmetto Cup for a second straight year by a point total of 44 to 37. Overall, the SCPGA has 13 wins, the SCGA has 7 wins, and there has been 1 tie in past Palmetto Cup Matches. One match was cancelled due to weather in 1997.
