39th Four Ball Championship

Dargan Brothers Are Victorious

Cooler than usual June temperatures greeted the players in the final match of the SCGA's 39th Annual Four Ball Championship played at The Windermere Club in Blythewood. The temperatures did not reflect the hot match that was about to take place between defending champions Steve Liebler of Irmo, Gus Sylvan of Columbia and their opponents Robert and David Dargan of Columbia.

Sylvan and Liebler were seeking to be the only team ever to "threepeat" in this two man team format. It was not to be as the Dargan brothers combined for seven birdies against no bogies in disposing of Sylvan and Liebler on the eighteenth hole 2 & 1. The Dargans got to three up after a 12th hole bogey by Sylvan & Liebler. Back to back birdies by Sylvan on holes 13 & 14 got his team back to only one down. But, a 30 foot birdie by David Dargan on the hard # 15 put the Dargans back to 2 up where it remained through the seventeenth.

This is not Robert Dargan’s first Four Ball Championship, he teamed with his father, Bob Dargan, to win the 1990 Four Ball Championship.

This is one of 17 statewide championships, 85 one day events and nine USGA qualifiers conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.
