Todd & Todd Win Number Five

The brother tandem of Walter and T.D. Todd defeated the young team of Shane Birckbichler and Ryan Potter 2 & 1 in the final match to win the 40th Annual SCGA Four Ball Championship.

Both teams came out firing at the holes as they combined for seven birdies out of the first ten holes played. The early advantage was with Potter and Birckbichler after Potter rolled in a birdie putt on the first hole of the day. With both teams making birdies, the Todd team finally got back to all square after Walter Todd made a spectacular birdie from a side hill second shot on the 9th hole. On hole 10, the Todd’s took their first lead of the day with a T.D. Todd chip in from short of the green.

Potter and Birckbichler, both 20 year old teammates on the Furman University golf team, could never again gain the advantage over the 49 year old T.D. and 42 year old Walter Todd. Both teams matched each other par for par through hole number 16. On the par 3 17th hole, Walter and T.D. Todd both hit their tee balls within 6 feet of the hole. After a 3-putt bogey from Potter and a missed birdie putt from off the green from Birckbichler, Walter Todd sealed the match making his birdie putt from below the hole.

The 2003 SCGA Four Ball win makes this the fifth such title for the Todd brothers. The Todd’s have been beaten multiple time in the Semi-finals, but have never lost a finals match in the event.

The top 31 teams after two days of four-ball stroke play qualified for the match play portion of the Four Ball Championship. After two rounds of match play on Friday, the Quarterfinals and Semifinals were contested on Saturday morning and afternoon. The final 18-hole match was played Sunday morning.

Fifty-two teams started the competition playing the 6,762 yard Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree layout. The 40th Annual Four Ball Championship is one of 18 major events that the South Carolina Golf Association conducts throughout the year.
