Eassy Earns First SCGA Mid-Amateur Title
Hurricane Matthew exited the Carolinas in time for the SCGA to finish the 35th edition of the Mid-Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Lexington. Chris Eassy of Greer captured the crown for his first individual SCGA Championship after posting rounds of 67-71 for a total of six under 138.
After completion of the first round on Friday, Eassy led along with Charleston’s Troy Miller and Columbia’s Jarrett Grimes at five under par. As scheduled earlier in the week, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes prior to Hurricane Matthew’s arrival. Matthew dumped more than five inches of rain between Friday and Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless, the course held up and Eassy prevailed.
At the turn, both Eassy and Grimes were one over par for the day, as well as former champion Steve Liebler of Irmo who sat one shot off the pace. Eassy turned on the gas making birdies at the par four 10th, 12th and 16th holes. He stumbled on the final par five 18th, but his earlier birdies were enough to fend off the challengers. Grimes closed out the tournament with a one over performance of 73, finishing two shots back. Brian Quackenbush of Aiken, also had a good showing firing rounds of 71-69 to finish tied for second with Grimes.
Three players finished at three under par 141 including Liebler, Kyle Milner of Spartanburg and Kevin Roberts of Chesnee. Troy Miller fell out of contention early and posted a round of 82, finishing tied for 25th.
The 2016 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was conducted on the par 72 ~ 6,633 yard Country Club of Lexington course in Lexington, SC. The field consisted of 95 individuals playing 36 holes of stroke play after the second round was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew. The Mid-Amateur is one of 21 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 35th year of existence.
