Young Claims Second SC Amateur
Georgetown, SC – Great conditions again greeted the field for the final round of the 85th South Carolina Amateur Championship at DeBordieu Club in Georgetown, SC. Carson Young of Pendleton held onto his third round lead and claimed his second SCGA Amateur Championship in four years.
Young began the day with a two shot lead over Andrew Novak of Mt. Pleasant. He made bogey on the first hole. When asked if the bogey worried him he said, “you can’t think about that. I actually had two chip-ins, there and 14.” The chip-in on seven steadied the ship and he finished the front nine at even par.
Novak closed the gap by one, shooting one under on the front with birdies on seven and the par five ninth. Young however stretched his lead to two with the chip-in on the par three fourteenth and made all pars coming in to finish at two under 70 on the day and 11 under par for the championship.
This is “definitely one of the best. To win this tournament twice I know it’s something special. If you ask me today, it’s probably the best just because I haven’t won in so long,” Young stated.
With his second title, Young joins the ranks of only six other players that have won the SCGA Amateur Championship multiple times in the stroke play era which began in 1958. He joins fellow Clemson Tigers and PGA Tour professionals Lucas Glover and DJ Trahan as well as his head coach Larry Penley as repeat winners.
This SCGA Amateur Championship resembled the recent Open Championship in Scotland in terms of a two horse race. Novak and Young were paired together for each round this week and both showcased their shot making abilities, outpacing the field by ten and seven shots respectively. As the tournament wore on, only four players finished under par – Young, Novak, Bryson Nimmer of Bluffton and the ever steady, former Walker Cup team member Todd White of Spartanburg. Nimmer and White tied for third at one under par 287 for the four days.
The 2016 SCGA Amateur Championship is being played in Georgetown, S.C. over the par 72 – 7,012 yard layout of the DeBordieu Club designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. The field consisted of 126 players by the time the first round began that were either exempt or qualified at one of four sites. The Amateur Championship is one of 21 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 85th year of existence.
