INAUGURAL SUPER SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Thompson Claims Inaugural Super Senior Championship
First round leader Rick Thompson struggled, but managed to finish with a two day total of 145 to win the Inaugural Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Camden Country Club.
Thompson, a Bluffton resident, followed his “career” round of 69 yesterday with a 6 over par 76 in the final round. The 70 year old Thompson started the day with a birdie on his first hole, but then quickly ran into trouble playing the next six holes in five over par. Thompson righted the ship however, finishing the last eleven holes in only two over par and holding off Sandy Knapp of Callawassie to win by two. Dick Horne of Mt. Pleasant finished in 3rd place at 149.
In the Championship B division, Gunnar Bennett hit 15 greens in regulation to shoot a final round 74 and a two day total of 157 to win by two shots over John Stokley and Jack Pfieffer.
The Inaugural SCGA Super Senior Championship was played on the par 70 – 5,932 yard Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. The event was created to honor the 40 years of service to the SCGA by Harry Wilson. The field consisted of 60 individuals over the age of 65 years old playing a Stroke play format conducted over thirty six holes. The Super Senior Championship is one of 18 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.
