Mollica & Elmore Come From Behind to Win

Phillip Mollica of Anderson fired a 9-under par 63 on his own ball, combined with a number of birdies from his partner, Baker Elmore of Cheraw, to give their team the win at the 2005 SCGA Lefty-Righty Championship.

Mollica and Elmore finished the day at 11-under par 61, giving them a two-day total of 128 and a one shot win over Jon Evans of Hollywood and Rick Dresel of Goose Creek. Mollica opened the round with consecutive birdies at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, followed by a birdie at the eighth. Combined with Elmore’s birdie at the seventh, the team went out with a 5-under par 31.

On the backside, Elmore got the team going with a birdie at the eleventh. Mollica then turned it on, making birdie at the 13th and 14th, then eagle at the par five 16th and birdie on 18. With no errors throughout the day, the young duo would combine to shoot 6-under par 30 on the back nine.

In the First Flight, Allen Coursey of Columbia and Benny Timmerman of Greenwood, fired 9-under par 63 to finish at 137. Coursey and Timmerman finished one shot ahead of Benji Welch of Lake City and Butch Crawford of Hemingway.

In Second Flight action, Ronnie Neville and Sam Tune of Williston took home the win, with a two day total of 1-under par 143, finishing four shots ahead of three teams tied at 147. And in the Third Flight, the Florence duo of Wylie Slice and Jeff Dushane pulled off a two shot win at 151, over Craig Schmehl of Sumter and Cliff Morris of Columbia.

In the 34th Annual Lefthanders Championship Mollica prevailed as well. His second round 9-under par 63 gave him a one shot victory over first round leader Patrick Cunning. Cunning finished the day at 1-under par 71, giving him a two-day total of 6-under par 138.

Allen Coursey of Columbia fired 68 today, giving him a two day total of 149, to win the First Flight, while Rollis Evans of Williston finished at 9-ver par 153 giving him the second place finish. In the Second Flight, Nick Kirby of Columbia fired a 1-over par 73 today to give him a two day total of 159 and a four shot victory over Craig Schmehl. While Wayne Sumner made a massive comeback, firing 77 in the final round to give him a two day total of 171 and the win in the Third Flight.

The 2005 SCGA Lefty-Right Championship and the SCGA Lefthanders Championship were played on the par 72, 6,347 yard, Lake Marion Golf Club in Santee, South Carolina. The Lefty-Righty and the Lefthanders Championship are part of a 17 event major tournament schedule conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.
