27th Lefty Righty & 32 Lefthanders Championship

Sill Defends and Then Partners with Yex to Win Again

It took one extra hole, but Stan Sill and Arthur Yex have once again claimed the Lefty-Righty Championship. The Spartanburg twosome shot a final round 64 for a two-day total of 131 and a tie for first place with the Columbia team of Robert Dargan and Brad Krapfel. The father son team of Bob and David Dargan finished three shots back for third place.

Sill and Yex looked to have things wrapped up until Robert Dargan drained a 25-foot putt on17, a par 3, for birdie and Krapfel two putted the par 5 18th hole for birdie. With the two teams tied they headed to the par 5 1st hole for a sudden death play off. The team championship was claimed after Sill made a superb up and down from short right of the green for birdie and Krapfel’s 5 footer for the tie lipped out. This year’s win marked the third time that Sill and Yex have won the SCGA Lefty-Righty Championship.

Other Lefty-Righty flight winners included the young team of Matt Frye and Jordan Fink in the First Flight, John Chiles and Carl Wilkerson in the Second Flight, and Wayne Sumner and Mike Burton in the Third Flight.

Within the same playoff mentioned before, the Lefthanders Champion was decided. On the 18th hole, Robert Dargan made birdie to tie Sill for the lead. On the playoff hole, with Dargan running into trouble off the tee, Sill’s birdie guaranteed him the 2003 Lefthanders Championship.

Flight winners in the Lefthanders championship were Shorty Tyler in the First Flight, David Shealy in the Second Flight, and Dr. Bruce Carey in the Third Flight.

Seventy-two teams started the competition playing the 6,460 yard Lake Marion Golf Club layout. The 32nd Annual Lefthanders Championship and the 27th Annual Lefty-Righty Championship are one of 18 major events that the South Carolina Golf Association conducts throughout the year.
