11th Annual Partners Championship

White-King Capture SCGA Partners Championship

Todd White (Moore) and Kevin King (Hilton Head) posted the low round of the day with a 7-under par score of 65 to capture the 11th Annual Partners Championship conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.  The 36 hole event was conducted over the 6,514 yard - Par 72 P. B. Dye designed Northwoods Golf Club in Columbia, SC.

With the final round being conducted at four ball stroke play, all 21 teams in the Championship Flight were within four strokes of the lead and had the potential to capture the crown.  When the second round began, two teams were tied for the lead at 10-under par (62), four teams were one stroke back at 63, and three others were within two strokes at 64.

The White-King tandem began the day at 64, two strokes out of the lead after a first round score of 8-under par 64 in the Captain's Choice portion of the championship.  They wasted little time on the front making two birdies(5 and 6) and an eagle (on the long par 4 - 7th) in the span of three holes to move into a brief tie for the lead.  Former champions, Walter and T. D. Todd, Jr. of Laurens began the day one shot out at 9-under par, but took a one stoke lead at 13-under into the final nine with two birdies (2 & 8) and an eagle on the par-5, sixth.  First round leaders Jimmy Hawkins and Jim Martin could only manage a 2-under, 34 on the front and headed to the final nine, one stroke back.

The Todds found trouble at the tenth and a bogey-5 brought them back into a tie for the lead.  The back side saw teams seesawing back and forth with the lead as White-King, Hawkins-Martin, and Todd-Todd all recorded birdies at different stretches to share the lead.  White-King made birdies at 17 and 18 to finish at 15-under, 129.  Hawkins-Martin got to 15 under after consecutive birdies at 16 and 17, and Todd-Todd reached 15 under after birdies at 13, 14, and 15.  A two putt par for Hawkins-Martin and a scrambling par by Todd-Todd  on the 18th hole left all three teams tied at 129.

Moving to the par-4 first hole, White and King took the championship with a birdie-3 on the 385 yard hole, leaving the other two contenders languishing in second place.  The team of Richard Moore (Isle of Palms) and Joe Padgette (North Charleston) finished alone in fourth place after a final round 68 and a 131 (13 under par) total.

Terry Willis and John Black (Taylors) tied for  first in the First Flight with  Blake Hare and Duane Jolliff (Irmo) at 8-under par 136.  The senior duo of Vic Hannon (Camden) and Bob Stringer (Blythewood) took honors in the Second Flight with a final round 69 (3-under par) and a 140 total.
